COMBE, William (1741-1823), attributed to]. The Wars of Wellington, a narrative poem in fifteen cantos ... by Dr. Syntax . London: C. Whittingham for the author, 1819. 4° (289 x 221mm). 30 hand-coloured plates, drawn and etched by William Heath aquatinted by J.C. Stadler. (Some light soiling of plate and text margins, some offsetting and occasional light spotting of text.) Contemporary marbled boards with red morocco label on upper cover (rebacked in brown morocco). Provenance : William J. Young, Longsight (printed label). FIRST EDITION with finely-conceived battle scenes by Heath which naturally include Waterloo but focus particularly on the campaign in Portugal and Spain. The second edition of 1821 only contained 6 plates. Attributed to Combe by Abbey and Tooley, but probably another author's use of the Dr. Syntax pseudonym. Abbey Life 357; Tooley 153.
