A composite atlas of 8 maps on 47 sheets, including the principal county surveys of Northumberland, Durham, Westmoreland, Cumberland, and Yorkshire, by Thomas Jefferys and others, hand-coloured in outline. A fine composite atlas of the large scale surveys of the Northern Counties of England, including the major northern surveys of Thomas Jefferys. Thomas Jefferys was one of the most dedicated mapmakers and county surveyors of the 18th century. Although it was the Society of Arts Prize of 1759 for accurate new county maps that created the impetus for the remapping of England at county level, it was inevitably down to local subscribers to fund the projects. Thomas Jefferys was the master of this field. Despite going bankrupt in November 1766 due to the escalating costs of the field surveys and selling his stock at auction in 1767, he was able to refinance and had completed seven new county surveys by the time of his death in 1771, including Hodskinson and Donald's Cumberland, the Yorkshire and Westmoreland surveys in this volume.
