CONTRACT LOANING MONROE OUT FOR "CLASH BY NIGHT." Typed Carbon Signed ("Marilyn Monroe"), 1 p, 4to, Hollywood, January 31, 1952, being a signed carbon of an agreement between Twentieth Century-Fox and Wald-Krasna Productions for use of Monroe's name and likeness on covers of sheet music for the songs from Clash by Night, light toning, otherwise very fine; together with Typed Carbon Signed of Norman Krasna, 6 pp, 4to, Los Angeles, August 21, 1951, being a carbon of a document agreeing to the loan of Monroe's services to Wald-Krasna Productions, light toning. Present also are 2 Typed Carbons, totaling 2 pp, 4to, Los Angeles, November 29, 1951, unsigned by stamped "Legal Dept," referring to Monroe's billing in the film. All documents are bound in blue wraps with stapled binding, titled on the upper cover, "Loan of services of MARILYN MONROE 'Clash by Night.'" Clash by Night is Fritz Lang's adaptation of Clifford Odet's moving play about a world-weary woman who moves back to her hometown, marries one man and starts an affair with another. Monroe's performance as the sassy, naive newlywed contrasts nicely with Barbara Stanwyck's tough, bitter Mae, and attracted excellent notices for the young actress. Though Monroe is a year away from superstardom at this point, her stock is clearly rising, as documented by the addenda that insist on better billing for Monroe onscreen and in the film's ancillary material.
