Broadsheet 2° (550 x 371mm). 34 tinted lithographs, including frontispiece and title-page. (Light or marginal spotting in about 12 plates, heavier in 4.) Publisher's maroon russia-backed cloth boards, titled on front cover and spine, yellow endpapers, interleaves (short tear at rear board). FIRST EDITION. A leading animal painter beloved by the Victorians for his bucolic landscapes and faithful portrayals of cows and sheep, 'Cow' Cooper adopted lithography at an early date as a medium for his art. The work was conceived as individual finished pictures, not mere reproductions, and was so successful that it spawned pirated copies, distributed widely on the continent.
