Folding Seth Thomas 7-jewel travel clock, manual wind, in leather folding case, contemporary label to interior of case with ink note (in the hand of Annie McCarthy), "Property of Cormac McCarthy, 1967," 80 x 65 x 28 mm (case size).
Provenance: Cormac McCarthy, ink note from in the hand of his wife, 1967; Anne DeLisle.
This small travel clock is a relic from early in Cormac and Annie's marriage. The clock accompanied him, and then them, on their travels around Europe in those years. Stories are widely told of McCarthy living for lengths of time in hotel rooms, and carrying with him a high-wattage lightbulb that would allow him to write no matter how dim the room. This small travel clock from the early years of his writing stands as a reminder of that dedication.
