CORONELLI, Vincenzo Maria (1650-1718). Atlante Veneto; nel quale si contiene la descrittione geografica, storica, sacra, profana & politica degl'Imperii, Regni, Provincie, e Stati dell'Universo . Venice: Domenico Padovani, 1690 [and, as volume II:] Corso geografico universale . Venice: by the author, 1692. 2 volumes, 2° (482 x 337 mm). Engraved half-title to volume I. 191 engraved charts, maps, views and plates (166 of which double-page), 2 engraved text-illustrations, headpieces and initials. (Some scattered light spotting and staining, 5 maps with slightly frayed lower edges, a few very short marginal tears.) Contemporary sprinkled calf, gilt panels to covers, gilt spines with raised bands, gilt-lettered in second compartments, gilt edges (rubbed, head- and tailcaps chipped to volume II with upper cover slightly soft.) IMPORTANT, FINE, LARGE-SCALE MAPS BY 'ONE OF ITALY'S MOST ILLUSTRIOUS CARTOGRAPHERS' (Shirley). The maps of North America in volume I depict the Mississippi with La Salle's recent explorations at its mouth in 1681-1687; the extent of French ambitions are reflected in the title 'Canada - Nuova Francia' over most of the eastern half of the continent. In volume II, the map 'La Louisiana' depicts the Great Lakes with recent discoveries. The northern and western coasts of Australia are engraved according to the voyages of Edels, Nuyts, and Tasman (1618-54), and the map 'Mare del Sud' of the Pacific Ocean delineates the coasts of New Zealand and Tasmania, based on Tasman's voyage (1660). The present copy's volume I conforms to NMM III 36, adding 3 preliminary plates (including the 'gli argonautica' plate and a double-page engraved plate of a battle scene) as well as three plates of ships; the pagination agrees with Phillips, although the plate listings do not correspond. The present copy's volume II contains over half the plates of NMM III 37, and since both NMM and Phillips suggest that volume II was published in 1695 or later, then perhaps Corso geografico can be seen as an early variant issue. Certainly it seems to correspond with Graesse's statement: 'Cet ouvrage est quelfois cité sous le titre d' Atlante Veneto ' (II 273). NMM III 36-37; Phillips 521. (2)
