Lot of 26 letters written by Corporal Carl R. Kramer, Co. G, 168th Regiment (3rd Iowa), U. S. Infantry, while serving in World War I. Most letters are written to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Kramer, of Ottumwa, Iowa. The 168th Regiment was part of the 42nd Division which is often referred to as the "Rainbow Division," a moniker referencing a comment made by then Major Douglas MacArthur. Upon reviewing the National Guard units from 26 states which comprised the Division, MacArthur commented, "The 42nd Division stretches like a rainbow from one end of America to the other." Activated in August 1917, the Division arrived in France in November/December 1917. Also included with the letters is a hardcover book Planes of the Great War 1914-18 written and illustrated by Howard Leigh (1909-1942), 111pp, published in London in 1934 by John Hamilton. Includes 50 beautiful illustrations signed by noted aviation illustrator Howard Leigh. The book does not include its original dust jacket and has minor foxing throughout, but is in overall good condition.
