Beschreibung:

.52 caliber. 20.5" octagon to round barrel. SN: 424. Blued and color casehardened finish, smooth walnut buttstock without forend. Single shot percussion tilting block breechloading carbine. Lock marked in three lines behind the hammer COSMOPOLITAN ARMS CO / HAMILTON O_US / GROSS' PATENT. No visible marking on the side of the frame. Early style serpentine lever with secondary trigger to release the breech block, early style rounded hammer with arched hammer nose. Bottom of frame and barrel both with serial number 424. Long range ladder rear sight with large iron base and blade front sight. Sling bar and ring on reverse of frame. Only about 1,200 of the early production Cosmopolitan carbines were produced prior to being superseded by the Gwyn & Campbell produced variants. Of those 1,140 of this pattern were ordered by the state of Illinois through the US Ordnance Department. While this carbine is not listed by number in the Springfield Research Service serial number books, the numbers closest to it, including #394, #420 and #483 were all issued to Company I of the 5th Illinois Cavalry and more than likely this carbine was used by the 5th Illinois as well. The Cosmopolitan Carbine is one of the harder secondary US military carbines from the Civil War period to find for sale and this is a solid example worthy of adding to any advanced carbine collection. Condition: Good. Metal is moderately oxidized with some scattered pitting, more noticeable on the frame than the barrel. Frame with more oxidation and mottling. Mechanically functional, bore fair to good with decent rifling and moderate pitting along the length, showing a few patches of heavier pitting. Stock with moderate wear, lightly sanded with scattered bumps, dings and mars.
