Beschreibung:

Council of Trent. Canones et Decreta Sacrosancti ocumenici et generalis concilii tridentini sub Paulo III, Pio, Pontificibus Max. Rome: Paolo Manuzio, 1564
Printed on vellum. The first edition of the canons and decrees of the council of Trent, with the privilege on the verso of the title undated, Roman numeration, and with the incorrect catchword (“fedis”) on page LXVIII erased (as with paper copies of the same printing).
The presence in the Bibliotheca Brookeriana of two copies of this first edition of the Canones et decreta printed on vellum should not be misconstrued: vellum copies are excessively rare. Renouard could cite just one (p.193), collected by Antonio Magliabechi (1633-1714), and now in the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale, Florence. Another, once belonging to Charles de Guise, Cardinal de Lorraine (1525-1574), is in the Bibliothèque nationale de France (Vélins-270; described by Van Praet, I, p.255 no. 357). A third vellum copy is in the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek in Vienna (CP.1.B.7 ALT) and a fourth in the Biblioteca Corsiniana in Rome (minutely described by Generoso Calenzio, “Delle rarità e preziosità tipografiche del Tridentino” in his Documenti inediti e nuovi lavori sul Concilio di Trento (Rome 1874), pp.460-461).
Folio (346 x 230 mm). collation: A-V6: 120 leaves. (Some characteristic discoloration of vellum to approximately 10 leaves.)
binding: Eighteenth-century Spanish calf (354 x 239 mm), spine gilt, orange morocco lettering-piece, covers stained with palm-leaf pattern, red silk pastedowns.
provenance: Inscription of a Spanish monastic library on title-page (washed) and inscription on final blank leaf (washed) — Juan José Relosillas Mellado (1848-1889, printed book label on title-page). acquisition: Purchased from Librairie Thomas-Scheler, 2014. references: UCLA 720; Edit16 77060; Renouard 190/4
