Large 4to (310 x 245 mm). 422 hand-colored engraved plates (Vol 64-65, 169; Vol 66-67, 169; Vol 70, 84). (66 printed from large printing plates) by Swan, after Walter Hood Fitch James McNab, Mrs. Withers, William Herbert, Thomas Nuttal and others. Later brown half morocco, spine lettered in gilt. Condition : vol 64-65 - title to first volume cut down at lower blank margin, some spotting, occasionally heavy; Vol 66-67 - overall light toning to plates, title to first volume detached and cut down at lower blank margin, some spotting, occasionally heavy; stitching broken; Vol 70 - title to first volume cut down at lower blank margin, some spotting, occasionally heavy; some hinges in the set split. Provenance : Lynn Abbott Trust. very rare large paper issue of five sample volumes from the world’s longest running and best-known botanical periodical. This work is regularly found as an octavo, with the images printed from the larger printing plates folded. This experiment with the larger format appears to have been short-lived and is not mentioned by the standard bibliographies.
