Portrait of Crow King (d. 1884) in US Major's army jacket with bone "hairpipe" breast plate. During the battle of the Little Bighorn, Crow King and his band of 80 warriors attacked Custer from the south, allowing Crazy Horse and Gall to encircle the doomed 7th Cavalry. Very fine to near excellent condition. Silver gelatin photograph, 7 x 8.75 in. Chief Plenty Coos. Penciled identified on verso. Barry's blindstamp at lower right and Superior, WI applied paper label on verso. Plenty Coos, also "Coups," (1849-1932), was a noted Crow warrior who became chief at age 25. After his death, the Crow decided that the title "Chief" would no longer be used. Light corner and edge wear to photograph. Silver gelatin photograph, 6.5 x 8.5 in. Chief Joseph.
