Beschreibung:

quarter plate size, in leather case with red velvet pad stamped "W.A. Pratt 139 Main St. Richmond." A dramatically lit horizontal post-mortem image of a tiny baby placed upon the aproned lap of an African American woman, only her hands visible to signify her race. A superb, and cerebral image, that speaks volumes of the complex interelationships between slaves and masters in the Ante-bellum south. According to Craig's "Daguerreian Registry," Pratt began his career in Richmond, Virginia, as early as 1844, though he later apparently practiced in Alexandria. Pratt exhibited a whole plate daguerreotype of the Governor of Virginia, surrounded by other distinguished men at the Crystal Palace Exhibition in London, in 1851. He returned from his trip to Europe in 1852 and was listed as a daguerreian at 145 Main Street, Richmond. He is known to have occupied other Main Street Richmond addresses; by 1859 Craig notes he no longer appears in Richmond directories. Provenance:Brasseur Collection of Cased Images Condition:Image EXC. Case beginning to seperate at spine.
