DALVIMART, Octavien]. The Costume of Turkey. London: T. Bensley for William Miller 1802 [watermarked 1796-1811]. 2° (352 x 257mm). Parallel titles and text in French. Hand-coloured stipple-engraved title vignette and 60 plates by Dadley and William Poole after Dalvimart. (Light soiling to title.) Contemporary russia gilt, covers with neo-classical roll-tool border, spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in one, the others with repeat pattern in gilt, by Charles Hering, with his ticket, (joints repaired), slipcase. Provenance : M.J. Robyns (name at foot of spine, armorial bookplate); Hans Fürstenberg (armorial booklabel). This work has text based on various sources (d'Ohsson, Dallaway, Tott, etc.). According to the preface, Dalvimart travelled in Turkey in about 1798 and made drawings on the spot. He was certainly in Athens in 1797, but little else is known of his life and works. Cf.
