Damon, Samuel Chenery, editor. The Friend, A Monthly Journal, Devoted to Temperance, Seamen, Marine and General Intelligence. Honolulu: The Polynesian Office, 1849-50. Volumes VII and VIII including (with separate title-page): Damon, Samuel C. A Trip From the Sandwich Islands to Lower Oregon, and Upper California; or, Thirty Leaves Selected From “Our Log-Book.” 4to (289 x 228 mm). Contemporary tan sheep over marbled boards. A few light spots, faintest dampstaining to one corner of preliminary leaves, covers with some wear to extremities and some rubbing to spine, but an excellent copy overall. Father Damon was an important figure in Hawaiian history as well as a friend of Samuel Clemens. His account, included in his missionary newspaper, describes the Columbia River, Fort Vancouver, the Native Americans, Benicia, and San Francisco, which disappointed him: “As a city it did not fill up the ‘beau ideal’ which I had pictured in my imagination.” But, he goes on to say: “I was however not disappointed in the business-like appearance of the town … I soon learned that it was no place for an idle man.” Howes D-44; Cowen p.61.
