The Isles and Coast, &c. of New Holland , folding engraved frontispiece map, 14 engraved plates, mostly natural history, 1703; contemporary nineteenth century tree calf, sympathetically rebacked (vol,I upper joint re-hinged), 8vo, London Hill Pacific Voyages pp. 75-76 'Dampier was the best known...of the famous group of buccaneers that tormented the Spaniards in the South Sea from 1680 to 1720...He travelled extensively in the orient...from 1683 to 1691. It was on one of these trips that the first landing was made by the English on Australian shores. Dampier's book ensured him a commission in the Royal Navy and command of the Roebuck to conduct surveys of New Holland (Australia). His voyage in 1699 was the second expedition of the English to Australia. His description of the aborigines probably inspired Jonathan Swift to write about Gulliver among the Yahoos.
