Read more Daniel O'Neill Lot 30 - 'Landscape with Figure' Estimate: €8,000 - €12,000 Minimalist and atmospheric, this painting by Daniel ONeill caught the attention of actor Vincent Price, who visited Ireland on several occasions while filming. Although famed for his roles in mystery, noir and horror movies, Price also had a keen and educated interest in contemporary art, and never overlooked an opportunity to seek out artists who interested him. His collection, which also included work by Irish artists Harry Kernoff and Patrick Graham was highly rated by critics and curators. Commissioned by Sears Roebuck department store, the Vincent Price collection was used to generate a wider appreciation of art in the United States and abroad. Although it may depict an isolated figure standing on a seashore, ONeills Landscape with Figure is an enigmatic work, suffused with mystery and imagination, suggesting rather than depicting. ONeill has divided the painting into two horizontal bands. The upper, suggesting a grey and misty sky, is heightened with a single brushstroke of whitea cloud perhaps, but also clearly a paint mark made by lightly dragging the brush across the surface of the painting. There is a suggestion of twilight on the horizon, but again no details are visible. The ground, or seashore, is equally minimalist, a terracotta colour in the foreground giving way to an undulating arc of darker brown, and finally a grey line on the horizon. The figure of a person standing in the foreground is suggested simply, with vertical dashes of red and black. The subtle qualities of Landscape with Figure would have appealed to Price, who often played dark, brooding and mysterious roles in his long career as an actor. Peter Murray
