DAREDEVIL No. 1 Author: Place: Publisher: Marvel Date: April, 1964 Description: CGC certified: Fine+ (6.5). Cream to off-white pages. Stan Lee script. Cover by Bill Everett and Jack Kirby Art by Everett. Origin & 1st appearance: Daredevil. "This magazine is certain to be one of your most valued comic mag possessions in months to come!" -Stan Lee. Debut of Marvel's sightless swashbuckler. The last great character launch of Marvel's foundational creative explosion (1961-1964), and one of the most significant comic books of the Silver Age. Bill Everett's artwork, with Kirby input and Ditko assistance, is intriguingly out-of-step with the other Marvel mags of the day, harkening to the gloomy atmospherics of Everett's Atlas-era horror and crime stories. Even the cut-and-paste cover design invokes the try-anything, beat-the-deadline aesthetics of the pre-Code years. Several key elements of the character's mythos are introduced here (grim urban setting, Film Noir-ish visuals, emphasis on street-level crimefighting), only to be largely forgotten until Frank Miller revitalized the book starting with issue #158. CGC census: 212 copies graded 6.5 Universal. Comparable CGC sales: Numerous sales in this grade, varying from about $2300 to about $3200. Look for prices to zoom once DD joins the MCU proper. Consignments Accepted for PBA's Next Comic Book Auction. Golden Age, Silver Age, Pre-Code, Original Art, Interesting Ephemera Sought. Contact ivan@pbagalleries.com for details.
