II lightly waterstained at beginning and end, some spotting throughout). Contemporary brown cloth gilt (head and tail of spine damaged. lightly rubbed). Provenance : Charles P. Wilder, 1846 (inscription on blank in each volume and top margin of text in vol. I). FIRST AMERICAN EDITION of Darwin's first published book. According to Freeman, it is the one most often read, which 'stands second only to On the Origin of Species as the most often printed'. Freeman 16. (2)
