DARWIN FAMILY.] -- BIBLE, New Testament, English. The English Hexapla, exhibiting the Six Important English Translations of the New Testament Scriptures . London: Samuel Bagster and Sons, 1841. 4 o (289 x 208 mm). Title printed in red and black. Contemporary black blind-tooled hard-grained morocco, gilt-lettered on spine, edges gilt (joints lightly rubbed). Provenance : William Darwin Fox (1805-1880), 2nd cousin of Charles Darwin (gift inscription). WITH A FINE DARWIN-FAMILY ASSOCIATION. Inscribed on the front free endpaper to William Fox Darwin: "Presented on the occasion of His Marriage, to the Revd. W. Darwin Fox Rector of Delamere as a token of heartfelt gratitude and sincere Christian regard, by his respectful and faithful Thomas Lee Delamere, June 26th 1846." Fox, like Charles Darwin, had prepared for the clergy at Cambridge. He was also a naturalist and entomologist, particularly collecting beetles. At Cambridge Fox and Darwin became friends and Fox tutored his younger cousin in natural history. In his autobiography, Charles Darwin wrote: " I was introduced to entomology by my second cousin W. Darwin Fox, a clever and most pleasant man, who was then at Christ's College, and with whom I became extremely intimate." The English Hexapla is itself an important edition of the New Testament, providing the text in Greek with the English translations of Wycliff, Tyndale, Cranmer, Genevan, Anglo-Rhemish and the authorized editions.
