II - Bermannus, sive De re metallica Dialogus - Interpretatio Germanica vocum rei metallicae, first edition, title and verso of final text f. with woodcut printer's device, full-page woodcut illustration of subterranean waters to n3 verso, woodcut historiated initials, lacks M6 (most likely blank, cf. Honeyman copy, which had 2 blanks, although Adams only calls for one), early ink inscriptions to head of title, water-stained, causing occasional small light black spots, small worm trace or holes to inner margin of some ff. (does not detract from overall appearance), some spotting or light foxing, new endpapers, contemporary vellum, lacking 1 tie, ink ms. title and decoration to spine, some creasing to spine, [Adams A345; Grolier/Horblit 2a; Hoover 14; Norman 19; Stillwell Science 565], folio, Basel, Hieronymus Froben and Nicolaus Episcopius, 1546. *** First edition of the 'first handbook of modern systematic Minerology' (Grolier / Horblit). This collection of six treatises on geology and metallurgy contains some of Agricola's most important works. The first is considered the earliest work on physical geology; the second deals with subterranean waters and gases; the third is Agricola's attempt to classify fossils according to their physical properties and is the first systematic mineralogy; and the fourth treatise lists references to minerals and mining in classical history. The Bermannus, Agricola's first work on mining, is here reprinted from the original edition of 1530.: 'Ex Biblioteca D.D. Joanes de Miranda et Oquendo' (engraved bookplate).
