FIRST EDITION of "the most famous account of drug addiction in English literature" (Norman). Confessions first appeared in the London Magazine in October and November 1821. De Quincey added an appendix to the book version which tabulated his use of opium during a time when he was attempting to reduce his dependency. Tipped to verso of half-title leaf: Autograph Letter Signed (initials) by De Quincey to "My Dear Sir" (a magazine editor), n.p. [London], "Noon Sat. June 13," n.y., 1 page, 12mo, regarding articles, including one on opium: "...The opium art. is distinct; and like be about half that length [or two pages]..." Tinker 817; Norman 619.
