DE QUINCEY, Thomas, (1785-1859)]. Confessions of an English Opium-Eater . London: Taylor and Hessey, 1822. 12 o (177 x 105 mm). Half-title, leaf of advertisements at end. Original drab boards, uncut (rebacked, preserving nearly all of the original spine and all of the original printed spine label, some wear and staining to covers); red morocco pull-off case. Provenance : George Sharpe (ownership inscription dated December 1822 on half-title); 19th-century armorial bookplate; 20th-century bookplate of Robert J. Collier. FIRST EDITION of "the most famous account of drug addiction in English literature" (Norman). Confessions first appeared in the London Magazine in October and November 1821. De Quincey added an appendix to the book version which tabulated his use of opium during a time when he was attempting to reduce his dependency. Tipped to verso of half-title leaf: Autograph Letter Signed (initials) by De Quincey to "My Dear Sir" (a magazine editor), n.p. [London], "Noon Sat. June 13," n.y., 1 page, 12mo, regarding articles, including one on opium: "...The opium art. is distinct; and like be about half that length [or two pages]..." Tinker 817; Norman 619.
