Deane served as American ambassador to France from 1776-77 and is responsible for much of the foreign support for the colonial cause, including the negotiation of the 1778 Treaty of Amity. “Charges of fraud and peculation in the management of the public moneys, and of engaging himself in the interest of the enemies of his country, etc., led to this publication” ( Sabin ).
