Title: DeGroot's Map of Nevada Territory exhibiting a portion of southern Oregon and eastern California Author: DeGroot, Henry Place: San Francisco Publisher: Published by Warren Holt Date: 1863 [or 1862?] Description: Lithographed map, hand-colored. 90x69 cm (35½x27¼") plus decorative border, folding into gilt-lettered cloth covers 16x10.5 cm (6¼x4¼"). With accompanying text, "Guide to Degroot's Map of Nevada Territory, Etc., Etc.," dated 1862. 10 pp. + 1 ad page. The first printed map devoted to Nevada, large and well executed, with full hand coloring. Includes details of the Washoe District, with Gold Hill, Virginia, Carson City, etc., silver mines located. Straddling the border with California is "Lake Tahoe or Bigler," and farther south Mono Lake. The counties of both Nevada and eastern California are named. The text itself is significant, and seems more rare than the map. OCLC/WorldCat lists only seven copies of the map, but none of the listings make reference to the text. Warren Heckrotte observes that "No other copies of the guide are known. The map alone is rare and is the first printed map devoted to Nevada. This map and the Bancroft map of the Pacific States, 1863, make the first printed use of the name "Lake Tahoe". The date 1863 on the map is not consistent with some features on the map and it may be that the map was advanced dated." Provenance: John Howell-Books, 8/80 Lot Amendments Condition: A few slight nicks or splits at folds; very good or better. Item number: 265083
