Derby Porcelain History - a 19th century handwritten manuscript notebook, the inside cover inscribed James Fairbanks, Derby 1822, No. of Watch ... 28538, Made by *** Derby, containing recipes and receipts for Egyptian Black, China Body, Coalport China Body, Glaze for Coalport China Body, Flesh Colour, Mr Spode's **tt, Gold Lustre the Same as in London' etc, marbled paper covers James Fairbanks was a potter who in 1822 succeeded William Porter as overseer of the useful ware department at the Nottingham Road factory, where he remained until his death in 1837. The titles of some of the receipts in this book would seem, perhaps, to indicate a level of industrial espionage and illustrates the competition between the factories of the day to produce the best and most commercially successful products. .
