These whistles, carved out of wood or ivory, are often decorated with the head of a chief or a mask, which matches perfectly the shape of the piece.” (Marie-Louise Bastin, La sculpture Tshokwe, Meudon, 1982, p. 235). The present lot includes, from left to right: a whistle depicting a chief or a cihongo mask; one depicting a cikunza mask; a woman with a large coiffure that denotes her high status; another cikunza mask; and another with a high coiffure.
