DescriptionJohn Hoppner, R.A.London 1758 - 1810Portrait of Charlotte Boyle Walsingham, Lady FitzGerald (1769–1831)
oil on canvasunframed: 127 x 101.6 cm.; 50 x 40 in.framed: 152 x 126 cm.; 59⅞ x 49½ in.Condition reportThe canvas is on a hard lining, and the paint surface is clean and covered in a modern glossy varnish. The surface is generally in good preservation apart from the sky in the background which shows some abrasion. There is a pronounced craquelure in the darks of the sky and in the sitter's hair. There are some beautifully preserved examples of impasto preserved in the hair, the face and the drapery. The colours seem well preserved also. There appears to be retouching in the aforementioned areas of craquelure particularly to the left of the sitter's chest. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned retouchings and a more recent campaign of retouching is visible in the sitter's face throughout, there is a concentrated area of retouching visible in the flesh tones of the sitte'rs chest, concentrated in an area approx. 8 by 8 cm. There are scattered retouchings throughout the rest of the canvas in small areas of the drapery and the rocky background. The painting presents well and is in good condition.
