DescriptionProperty of a NoblemanThe Sherborne House Hall ChairsA pair of George II mahogany hall chairs, circa 1730, the design almost certainly by William Kent the carving attributed to James Richards with James Moore the Younger 
with acanthus-carved cresting rails and lyre-shaped splat between faceted uprights with further acanthus-carved details, each boarded seat above fluted friezes and outswept rear legsCondition reportA fine pair of chairs in restored condition, with a re-polished surface and chips to some carved detail. One with repair to acanthus clasp to cresting rail. Some further repairs to carved detail. The boarded seats have been detached at some stage, as there are fitted screw-holes and small cracks at some of these sites. One chair with notable filled aperture to the front. The same chair with repaired breaks to each toe of the front leg. Reattached sections to the toe. The underside of each front square pad foot shows constructional joins - it is possible that these are repairs and some may possibly incorporate later timber. Each seat rail with joins from construction, chips, crack and old repairs. Overall height: 114cm., 3ft. 9in.Width of seat: 61cm., 2ft. Depth of seat: 46cm., 1ft. 6 1/8 in.
