Inspired by the 1926 Samuel Palmer retrospective exhibition, he learnt etching at Goldsmiths College in London and produced his first etching in the same year. Part of the etching revival of the 1920s, he believed that the study of nature and of arts and crafts and music was essential to the development of teachers and children. He took up etching after his retirement in 1964 and produced numerous etchings and books. His printing plates are held in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. From the collection of the artist Dilys Pinion.
