A Sense of Reality
Graham Greene
GREENE, Graham (1904-1991). A Sense of Reality. London: The Bodley Head, 1963; and New York: The Viking Press, 1963.
Dedication copies of both the first UK and first American editions with authorial presentation inscriptions. The dedicatee, John Sutro (1903-1985), was a British film producer who maintained a long correspondence with the likes of Greene, Evelyn Waugh and Harold Acton. John and Gillian’s archive is now at the Bodleian. This collection of stories, which includes the short novel Under the Garden, indicated quite a change of literary style: ‘Mr Greene has for the first time allowed himself the liberty of fantasy, myth, legend, dream’ (dust-jacket flap, UK ed.). Wobbe A45a (UK ed.).
2 volumes, octavo. UK ed.: publisher's full green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, original dust-jacket; US ed: publisher’s two-tone cloth lettered in black on front cover, and in white on a black ground on spine, original dust-jacket (both jackets faintly rubbed at head of spine, the UK vol. with tiny nick at head of spine at lower joint); contained in a modern morocco-backed cloth box. Provenance: John and Gillian Sutro (authorial presentation inscription on both dedication leaves).
