DETECTIVE COMICS No. 110 Provenance: DC Universe Collection Publisher: DC [Indicia: Detective Comics, Inc.] Date Published: April, 1946 Description: CGC certified: VG (4.0). Slightly brittle pages. Grader notes: Light spine splits to cover; light staple rust; moderate cover tanning; small piece out right bottom of back cover; very light staple tears; very small piece out left bottom of front cover." Provenance: The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION. CGC Census: 61 graded copies (58 Universal, 3 Restored). GPAnalysis: A 4.0 sold for $340 in 4/21. Credits: Cover: Win Mortimer. Scripts: Don Cameron. Art: Win Mortimer (ghosting for Bob Kane), George Roussos, John Daly, Curt Swan. Bat-cyclopedia: "In April 1946 Batman and Robin visit London for an encounter with the evil PROFESSOR MORIARTY.... a diabolical English villain who takes his name from a cunning criminal mastermind in the fictional adventures of Sherlock Holmes. 'A great criminal, that namesake of mine...!' gloats Moriarty. 'Holmes himself was in awe of him! Who can outwit me if I adopt his methods?' "...After Moriarty and his henchmen have stunned all of London with a 'series of breathtaking robberies,' Scotland Yard summons the Dynamic Duo to England to aid in the villains' capture. Indeed, BATMAN and ROBIN ultimately apprehend Moriarty and his cohorts with the aid of some somewhat inept assistance from ALFRED." — Michael L. Fleisher, The Encyclopedia of Comic Book Heroes Vol. 1: Batman. Macmillan: 1976, pp. 119, 281. Holmesian Hero: Bill Finger claimed that Batman was modeled after Sherlock Holmes, as noted several times in Les Daniels's Batman: The Complete History (Chronicle: 1999). While Holmes didn't leap from rooftop to rooftop or hurl batarangs at his foes, there are certain similarities between both crimefighters' methods and milieus. As one Bat-fan noted in her honors thesis, "the two characters essentially act as mirrors of each other, varying only as much as an archetypal blueprint should allow. Gotham City matches London in terms of the bleak and unruly. Bruce Wayne’s closest ally and live-in butler, Alfred Pennyworth, is a retired military doctor, just like Sherlock’s roommate Watson. Though Wayne employs a number of other helpers, though, he stays mostly cut off from society; in the same way, Holmes at times addresses individuals from every walk of life, but ultimately he maintains a detached persona. Both use methods and technologies unavailable to average individuals, and both fight villains that represent the worst of their homes, the outside world, and themselves. Additionally, just as Holmes becomes obsessed with a case, Batman also refuses to quit, even after serious injury." — Emma F. Reeves, "The World's Greatest Detectives: Analyzing the Relationship and Cultural Meaning of Sherlock Holmes and Batman." University of Southern Mississippi honors thesis, aquila.usm.edu, 2017, p. 48. The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION comprises over 40,000 comic books, including a copy of every single DC comic published for retail sale from 1934 to 2014. The collection was amassed by British music producer Ian Levine over the course of several decades, and it's been hailed as the single greatest collecting accomplishment in comic book history. This collection served as the basis for former DC Comics president Paul Levitz's monumental book 75 Years of DC Comics: The Art of Modern Mythmaking, published by Taschen in 2017. PBA is proud to present this epic collection in a series of themed sales over the next two years. To join the DC Universe Collection notifications list, contact pba@pbagalleries.com.
