Alfred Shapes Up: This ish features the debut of skinny Alfred (prior to this this, Alfred was portrayed as a rather portly gentleman). What was the reason for Alfred's sudden weight loss? Well, Alfred was portrayed in Columbia's successful 1943 Batman movie serial by actor William Austin, a rather lean fellow. So, in order to make comic book Alfred a closer match for his silver screen equivalent, Alfred's appearance was revamped. The in-universe explanation was that Bruce Wayne sent an overworked Alfred on vacation, and Alfred used the time to slim down ("I spent my holiday at a health resort, cultivatin' a new figure by hard work... and you'll never know how hard!"). The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION comprises over 40,000 comic books, including a copy of every single DC comic published for retail sale from 1934 to 2014. The collection was amassed by British music producer Ian Levine over the course of several decades, and it's been hailed as the single greatest collecting accomplishment in comic book history. This collection served as the basis for former DC Comics president Paul Levitz's monumental book 75 Years of DC Comics: The Art of Modern Mythmaking, published by Taschen in 2017.
