DETECTIVE COMICS Nos. 151, 152, 153 * Lot of 3 Comics Provenance: DC Universe Collection Publisher: DC [Indicia: National Comics Publications, Inc.] Date Published: 1949 Description: #151: Good- (1.8). Cover detached, small chip and transverse tears to spine, creases, tears. Cream pages. Overstreet: "Origin & 1st app. Pow Wow Smith, Indian lawman." #152: Good (2.0). Restored. Creases, a few small chips, COLOR TOUCHES and TEAR SEALS, possible GLUE TOUCH near staples, scrape to logo area, distributor's ink mark. Cream pages. #153: G/VG (3.0). Spine roll, touch of staple rust, staples slightly pulled, transverse spine tears, small chips, creases. Cream pages. Overstreet: "1st app. Roy Raymond TV Detective; origin the Human Fly." Cover pencils and inks: Jim Mooney and Dick Sprang. Stories and art: Dick Sprang, Don C. Cameron, Carmine Infantino, Bob Kane, and Charles Paris. The Persistence of Pow Wow: Includes the origin and 1st appearance of Pow Wow Smith, Indian Lawman. Pow Wow had two incarnations: he debuted as a contemporary lawman with a fancy college degree, and then DC shifted his adventures to the Old West, eventually retconning latterday Pow Wow as a descendant of Old West Pow Wow. Pow Wow still pops up in the occasional DC mag, a testament to the uncanny staying power of obscure B-listers in funnybook fandom. Indeed, those of you who frequent the online Mego Museum may have seen a custom Mego action figure of Pow Wow created by a guy who calls himself The Kryptonite Kid ("Here He is folks, the latest addition to My DC Comics Western Legends line, Pow Wow Smith! PWS is built on a vintage Mego body, and features a shirt, pants, moccasins, six guns, and gunbelt by Classic TV Toys. The head is a re-painted Space 1999 head, also from Classic TV Toys. The collar, tin star, and re-paint job are by little old me. Hope you like him, and thanks for looking!"). All of which underscores the strangely powerful persistence of comic book imagery — as Paul S. Hirsch stated in his book Pulp Empire: The Secret History of Comic Book Imperialism, "Comics are sticky; their impact lingers. It is why grown men and women collect, treasure, and even fetishize them. They hold meaning far beyond monetary value." Note: At the buyer's discretion, this lot of raw comics can be submitted by PBA to CGC for grading and encapsulation with a "DC Universe Collection" provenance designation on the labels. To request this service, contact PBA's comic book department for terms and conditions. The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION comprises over 40,000 comic books, including a copy of every single DC comic published for retail sale from 1934 to 2014. The collection was amassed by British music producer Ian Levine over the course of several decades, and it's been hailed as the single greatest collecting accomplishment in comic book history. This collection served as the basis for former DC Comics president Paul Levitz's monumental book 75 Years of DC Comics: The Art of Modern Mythmaking, published by Taschen in 2017. PBA is proud to present this epic collection in a series of themed sales over the next two years. To join the DC Universe Collection notifications list, contact pba@pbagalleries.com. Enjoying PBA's Batman sale? A very small number of softcover and limited edition hardcover auction catalogues are available for purchase. The catalogues are fully illustrated, thoroughly researched, and make excellent reference works for Batman fans. To order a copy, or to inquire about consignment opportunities, contact Ivan Briggs, PBA's Director of Comics: ivan@pbagalleries.com.
