London: Chapman & Hall, 1843 [but 1844]. Small 8vo (160 x 100 mm, 6 1/4 x 4 inches). Four hand-colored engraved plates. Half-title printed in blue, title page printed in blue and red. Publisher’s salmon-pink cloth, covers stamped in blind, upper cover and spine stamped in gilt, pale yellow endpapers. Green morocco backed case. Condition: Minor spotting to the title; spine and front cover slightly darkened and faded, hinges slightly cracked. Provenance: Thomas Sawyer (early signature on the front free endpaper). Second edition, but issued in January 1844 only three weeks after the first. This edition (generally considered among the title’s rarest) includes textual corrections to the first, is stated as the second edition on the title and was issued with the imprint date unaltered.
