DICKENS, Charles. Dombey and Son . London: Bradbury and Evans, 1846-48. 20 parts bound in 19, 8° (222 x 143mm). 40 etched plates by Hablot K. Browne, including frontispiece and additional title. Half title, 2-line errata leaf (early issue), and 12-line errata slip in pt.V. With alternative insert advertisements at end of pt.IX and quantity of diary leaves in pt.XV. (Most plates very browned, some with heavy marginal browning, lower corner of both plates in pt.II waterstained, margins of 4 plates in last pt. waterstained, text lightly browned or spotted, 2E4 & 2E5 in pt.XIV detached, occasional light soiling.) Original blue printed wrappers, uncut and partly unopened, in a cloth box (spines of c.10 volumes with repairs, some extremities a little chipped or with short tears, lightly soiled). Provenance : illegible signature on pt.XII, dated 1849; Eliz. Elsley (signature on 8 wrappers); Boston University, College of Liberal Arts Library (bookplate on inner cover of pt.I and box).

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL PARTS, later issue with the correct spelling of 'Captain' on p.324 in part XI (correction was made very early), earliest issue with 'if' omitted on p.426 (pt. XIV) but later issue with page number '431' (pt. XIV). With all the advertisments called for by Hatton & Cleaver. Plate no.35 in part XVIII is 'the first published example of what later became known as "Dark Plates"' (Hatton & Cleaver p.228). Hatton & Cleaver pp.227-250; Eckel pp.74-76; Podeschi A102.
