DODGSON, Charles Lutwidge ('Lewis Carrol'). Aventures d'Alice au Pays des Merveilles , translated by Henry Bué. London: R. Clay, Son, and Taylor for Macmillan, 1869. 8° (187 x 127 mm). 42 illustrations after John Tenniel (Scattered spotting to first and last few leaves.) Red morocco, by J.B. Hawes, covers with gilt frames and tooled corner-pieces, 'A.P.L.' gilt in the centre of the front cover, green endpapers, spine gilt-lettered, gilt edges (extremities lightly rubbed, spot on lower cover). Provenance : Alice Pleasance Liddell (inscription from the author; binding; sale, Sotheby's, 3 April 1928, lot 321) -- Sir R. Leicester Harmsworth (inscription; sale, Sotheby's, 26 March 1947, lot 2893). FIRST FRENCH EDITION, ALICE'S COPY -- THE DEDICATION COPY, IN RED MOROCCO AND INSCRIBED BY DODGSON TO THE ORIGINAL ALICE: 'Alice Pleasance Liddell from the author'. The translation was by Henri Bué, the son of a French teacher and colleague of Carroll's at Oxford. 'The difficulties of translators of Alice can be imagined. Sometimes they declined to face the difficulty as in Chapter VII ('were they in the well ... of course ... well in.'), or, when a popular song was parodied, they parodied a popular song of their own country' (WMGC 73). Carroll expressed gratitude for these sensible adaptations in a printed statement on the verso of the title-page. Williams, Madan, Green and Crutch 73.
