Dodgson’) to ‘Georgie’ [his cousin, Georgina Allen], Christ Church, Oxford, 17 July 1896, referring to a set of illustrations for a book by Allen (no longer present), 'Here are the 5 original drawings, by Mrs Shute, for “The Lost Plum-Cake”, which you may like to possess’, and adding ‘Macmillan is willing to publish it, if he can announce it as “with a Preface by Lewis Caroll”: & this I will add to it, if you give your permission’, one page, 8vo , bifolium; envelope.

Mrs Shute’s illustrations were included in the privately printed edition of The Lost Plum-Cake , published in 1896; Macmillan -- also Dodgson’s publisher -- then duly published a trade edition with Dodgson's introduction in January 1898. Dodgson took a particular interest in the publication of The Lost Plum-Cake , even giving his opinions on its cover design.
