DODGSON, Charles Lutwidge ('Lewis Carroll').] Jabberwocky . [Oxford: University Press, 1881]. Bifolium (227 x 146mm); printed on cream paper. (Short tear at fold, and one in margin.) RARE. 'A fine translation into Latin, made in Mar. 1872 by Augustus Arthur Vansittart, Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge'. Robert Scott Master of Balliol College, Oxford and co-author with Alice's father H.G. Liddell of A Greek English Lexicon , had pseudonymously published a humorous account of the alleged German origins of 'Jabberwocky' along with the 'original' German poem earlier in 1872. Dodgson replied, tracing its origins into more remote antiquity and transcribing another, lesser Latin translation of the poem. Scott countered with an attempt to trace the ballad back to Sanskrit. Williams, Madan, Green and Crutch 141.
