DOM PERIGNON 1990 IN MAGNUMS AND BOTTLES Lying London, E.16 Offered duty-paid, but available in bond Offered in original cartons The crowning glory in fostering the legend of Dom Pérignon was the decision by Moët & Chandon to launch the very first prestige cuvée in 1936, and to name it after him. The concept of a prestige cuvée was unknown at this time, for although the origins of Roederer Cristal go back much further, that wine was created at the personal request of Tsar Alexander II. The first commercially available vintage of Cristal was 1945, whereas the first Cuvée Dom Perignon to be launched was 1921; thus, Moët not only created a new sector of the market, but had this to itself for almost a quarter of a century. Tom Stevenson The 1990 Harvest After a mild winter, warm dry weather triggered a rapid start to growth in the vineyard at the end of March. During the nights of April 4th and 18th, the temperature dropped to -7°C and more than 7,000 hectares (approximately 17,000 acres) were affected by frost. Flowering took place under difficult conditions with low temperature and rain. The resulting colour and millerandage were compensated for, by the large number and size of the bunches. The scorching summer which followed continued right through to just before harvest when heavy rain began to fall. Picking began between September 11th and 20th. The quality of the musts was exceptional throughout the entire Champagne region. Richard Geoffrey Chef de Cave Dom Pérignon--Vintage 1990 Parcel lots 1047 to 1064 and lots 1065 to 1089 Tasting note: Medium pale but positive yellow/green. Fine steady. Intriguing, smoky. Medium deep - rich for Dom Pérignon. Good body. Lovely finish. M.B. 10/9/97 Tasting note: Pale yellow with shades of gold. An initial, almost floral impression gives way to aromas of acacia honey and fresh almonds culminating in notes of dried apricots and toasted brioche. On the palate the wine is full, round and complete without being opulent and expresses great harmony. The wine is firm and intense leading into a silky long finish reminiscent of preserved citrus fruit. Richard Geoffrey Tasting note: This immaculate cuvée, with its creamy velouté of fruit and mouthwatering, ripe acidity has the edge over the 1988, and promises to have two lives - like the 1982, but significantly superior. Probably equal in terms of quality to the 1975. Tom Stevenson 6 magnums per 6 magnums
