Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Romanée-Conti 2005
1 magnum per lot
The singular wines in this collection speak of the collectors’ excellent taste, precise nature and deep understanding of specific producers. Many of the wines in the collection were acquired directly from American distributors, or in some instances, directly from certain Domaines. Of most importance is the spectacular selection of rare Burgundy, the like of which we rarely see. The list of legendary Domaines seems endless: DRC, Roumier, Mugnier, d’Auvenay, Coche-Dury and Roulot are all worthy of special mention, but many other excellent producers play important roles across this glorious collection. Leaving Burgundy, the Rhône valley is well-represented, both the north and south. Magnificent vintages of Rayas sit next to Bonneau, Pegau and others, and moving north, you’ll find extremely rare bottles from the likes of Verset and Clape. There’s a superb selection of wines from Jacques Selosse, and classic Piedmont wines from Bartolo Mascarello, Cavalotto and Conterno, including extremely rare Barbaresco from the 1960s. This is a true connoisseur’s collection, and a joy to offer in this sale. THE VINEYARDS OF DOMAINE DE LA ROMANEE-CONTI The Domaine de la Románee-Conti owns 27 hectares of vines in prime sites in the commune of Vosne-Romanée together with a small holding in the Côte de Beaune. The top of the tree is Romanée-Conti itself, a monopole (wholly owned vineyard of 1.8 hectares), La Tâche, also a monopole with (6.06 hectares.) Richebourg 3.51 hectares, Romanée-Saint-Vivant (5.29 hectares), Grands Echézeaux (3.53 hectares) and Echézeaux (4.67 hectares). Also 1.02 hectares of Vosne-Romanée, Suchots and 2.26 hectares of Corton. Only a precious 0.67 hectares is made of Montrachet DRC, hectares and slightly less of Bâtard-Montrachet. These varied sites prove unquestionably that the French notion of terroir is not a fancy figment of Gallic imagination for the differences between each of the wines is marked, so consistent. Yet all five of the DRC burgundies are made, traditionally, in the same cellars, mostly from grapes of the same variety. Romanée-Conti itself has a unique concentration, La Tâche has a different sort of intensity, each having a superb yet vividly contrasting bouquet. Richebourg, next door, has a broader character, and so on. So what produces those differences: slight variations in subsoil, slope and drainage, fractionally, virtually imperceptible microclimate. Who knows. But fermented and élévé identically, the final wines are different. ROMANEE-CONTI 'Romanée-Conti,' as the local proverb goes, 'is the central pearl of the Burgundian necklace.' This minuscule vineyard gives its name to the most famous Domaine in the world, commonly referred to as 'D.R.C.' or, more reverentially, as The Domaine. The simple mention of the venerable DRC in general and its top wine, Romanée-Conti, more specifically, always elicits an ebullient response - memories are brought to life and experiences retold that truly express how drinking these wines can transcend one to another world. They are in a word, astonishing - a clear tribute to balance, finesse and refinement. Aubert de Villaine, co-owner of DRC, believes that "nothing is more difficult than to act simply: the ideal is to do nothing." Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Romanée-Conti 2005 Grand Cru, Côte de Nuits 1 magnum per lot
