Beschreibung:

double column, title with large woodcut printer's device, handsome large woodcut criblé initials, title with outer margin neatly repaired verso, water-stain to outer margin of all to d8 (encroaching on text) and then to a lesser extent to last few ff., 2n2&3 with a few inky finger-marks, late 19th century panelled calf, upper joint split, but holding firm, rubbed and scuffed, [Adams S1813; Renouard 75:13; Considine pp.44-45], folio, Paris, Robert Estienne, 1549. *** The rare second edition, which Renouard calls 'bien plus ample que la première'. Here Estienne expands his project of making Latin texts available to Francophones by 'adding French words from his own reading (including words taken from Rabelais) and inviting his readers to contribute words 'ès Rommans et bons autheurs François,' an acknowledgement that he was interested not only in translating the treasures of Latin but also in collecting the treasures of French' (Considine). Provenance: Alexander Arbuthnot 17th century ink signatures to title); 'Hume' (latin inscription) (17th century ink signature to title); Sir William Purves Hume Campbell, Bt. (engraved armorial bookplate).
