Beschreibung:

DOVES PRESS -- The English Bible , edited by F. H. Scrivener. Hammersmith: The Doves Press, 1903. Volumes I-II (only, of 5), 4° (335 x 235mm). Printed in black and red, woodcut initials after Edward Johnston Doves type and Greek type. (A few quires slightly spotted, occasional light inkmarking.) TRIAL BINDING of limp vellum [by The Doves Bindery], sewn with green silk on 4 linen tapes, 2 quires of Doves 2a paper totalling 8 ll. bound in at the beginning and end of each volume, the outer 2 pasted down (vellum lightly marked and slightly cockled). Provenance : 'The Doves Bindery 15 Upper Mall Hammersmith W.' (calligraphic inscription by Cobden-Sanderson on endpaper of vol. I) -- T.J. Cobden-Sanderson (inscription on vol. I endpaper: 'T.J. Cobden-Sanderson Dummy made for binding' and similar inscription in vol. II) -- text marked and annotated in the margins in green, blue, red, and brown inks indicating the biblical lessons according to the liturgical calendar. TRIAL BINDINGS FOR THE DOVES PRESS'S MOST IMPORTANT BOOK, FROM THE BINDERY'S ARCHIVE AND COBDEN-SANDERSON'S LIBRARY. The printing of the first volume was completed in December 1902 and that of the second in October 1903, but they were not published until June 1903 and January 1904 respectively due to the length of time needed to bind the unusually large edition of 500 copies (paper copies of the Press's previous four books had been published in editions of between 225 and 325 copies). These two volumes in trial bindings exhibit one major difference from the final edition binding: they are not titled on the spines. Ranson 'Doves' 6; Tidcombe Doves Press DP6; Tomkinson 'Doves' 6. (2)
