Beschreibung:

Printed broadside, 20 x 25 in. Metropolitan Police / Murder and Mutilation. Portraits, Description and Specimen of Handwriting of HAWLEY HARVEY CRIPPEN, alias Peter Crippen, alias Franckel; and ETHEL CLARA LE NEVE, alias Mrs. Crippen, and Neave. Wanted for the Murder of CORA CRIPPEN, otherwise Belle Elmore; Kunigunde Mackamotzki; Marsanger and Turner, on, or about, 2nd February last...With physical descriptions, handwriting samples, and photographic reproductions of Dr. Crippen and Le Neve. Signed in print by E.R. Henry, the Commissioner of Police of Metropolis. New Scotland Yard, London: Metropolitan Police Office, July 16, 1910. Trapped in an oppressive marriage to want-to-be actress and singer, Cora Turner, Dr. Hawley Harvey Crippen sought love elsewhere with an 18-year-old typist who worked in his homeopathic clinic. As his affections grew for his lover and disappeared for his wife, Crippen orchestrated the murder of his wife by planning to sedate her. The plan failed and, instead, he shot her. When her theater friends inquired about her whereabouts, he told them she traveled back home to America and subsequently died. Suspicious, one of Cora's friends reported her missing. Police officers opened an investigation into her disappearance. At first, Crippen told officers that she fled to America with one of her lovers, which she had done frequently. The officers believed the story, but paranoia convinced Crippen to attempt to leave the country with his mistress. Their attempted escape to Canada alerted police officers, and, after searching the home, investigators found the remains of a torso underneath bricks in the basement. While aboard the ship, the captain communicated through early wireless technology with police officers about the fugitives, causing an international sensation. When Crippen and his mistress disembarked, they were immediately arrested. Crippen became the first suspect caught via wireless technology and hanged for his crime. Condition: Some tears to the edges and some folds.
