It was commanded by Colonel Henry Dodge, and the regiment was accompanied on the first campaign by the artist George Catlin two letters from whom are included in the book. It has been suggested that the actual author was an Englishman, one William L. Gordon Miller, and that Hildreth was but a "New York farmer" who took the manuscript east to arrange for its publication, but the book is generally listed under Hildreth.
