DU HALDE, Jean Baptiste (1674-1743) – ANVILLE, Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d' (1697-1782). Carte la Plus Generale et qui Comprend la Chine, la Tartarie Chinoise, et le Thibet . [Paris:] 1734. Detailed map that covers all of China from the Caspian Sea to an early depiction of Sakhalin Island. Du Halde, a Jesuit and confessor to Louis XIV, never visited China, but assembled reports received from the Jesuit missionaries in China to write his Description géographique ... de l'empire de la Chine et de la Tartarie Chinoise . Published in 1735, this comprehensive survey was completed in 4 volumes, with maps by the royal geographer and cartographer d'Anville placed in vols I and IV. The maps were based on those prepared for the Kangxi Emperor by Jesuit missionaries for a woodblock Chinese atlas published in 1718 or 1719.
