The second edition in English of Du Halde's magnum opus, the first complete and the first in folio. With engraved front., 13 plates and 51 (41 folded, one coloured in outline) engr. maps and plans. "At the end of vol. 2 a general map of Tibet is called for, but it was never issued in this edition. In the preface the publisher claimed that he had much improved upon the original - the accurate text with valuable notes etc., and particularly the maps having 'everything necessary to prove their accuracy, and give them the preference to all other maps of China'" (Löwendahl). - Some browning and foxing, marginal waterstaining to first three leaves of vol. 2. Few small holes to pp. 275/76 in vol. 1 with minor loss of some letters, small tear to first folded map. Overall a fine copy bound in contemp. calf, rubbed, corners restored. Rebacked expertly to contemporary style, spines richly gilt. Provenance: Archibald Kennedy (author and customs agent, 1685-1763?) with his name on title, engraved bookplate John Ramsden.
