First title printed in red and black. Section title for the Supplementum within woodcut border. Both titles with woodcut printer's device. (Title slightly soiled, some occasional pale browning and spotting, pale marginal dampstain towards end.) Eighteenth-century calf gilt (rebacked, rubbed). Provenance : John Carteret, second Baron Carteret and first Earl Granville (1690-1723, bookplate); E.P. Jacobsen (bookplate). FIRST EDITION. "This, the second French national bibliography, was published within less than a year of the appearance of the first [François Grudé de la Croix du Maine, Premier Volume de la Bibliothèque du Sieur de la Croix-Du Maine , Paris, 1584]. Whether Du Verdier had got wind of Grudé's undertaking and tried to imitate it or whether each had conceived such a plan independently is unknown. However, both their works were considered complementary to such an extent that even after almost two hundred years they were combined in a single edition, much enlarged and corrected by Rigoley de Juvigny (Paris, 1772-1773, 6 vols.)
