with images of USS Chesapeake, Annapolis, Fort Niagara, Cuba, Japan and more. Lot of 2 albums, containing hundreds of snapshots, from 4 x 5 in. to 1 in. diameter, both with owner's name in front, Margaret Hay Robinson. One small photo album with string ties, 5.5 x 7.25 in. Front indicates these images are from Yokohama, Japan, August 18th 1902 and Odds and Ends. Most are silver prints with a few cyanotypes. In spite of the front note, it begins with "Jung Chow September 1901." Next page has an image from "Peking and Tientsin / October & November 1901." It also includes "The Coynel" Havanna, '99, Officers of the 9th US Infantry, Cuba 1898, and Colonel & Mrs. Regan Manila PI. Truly "Odds and Ends." The second book is a Chinese(?) volume, bound on the short side (and probably meant to be used vertically), likely acquired in Tientsin or elsewhere in Asia. The majority of these images are 3.5 in. square cyanotypes, with maybe a dozen silver prints. Most of these are from Madison Barracks and Fort Niagara, with a significant section also from Annapolis. There are a few from visits to Boston, Haverhill (MA), Niagara-on-the-Lake, Brooklyn, Staten Island. This album includes photos of ships at Annapolis: USS Terror, a group of destroyers, USS Hartford, as well as the USS Chesapeake. the majority of images are of friends and family, and from the labels and combinations of individuals in them, these are military families and Margaret is probably the daughter of one of the officers (all labeled "Papa," without enough to identify him). The Robinsons associated with many other officers. At Annapolis, they spent time on one of the training ships. There are a number of images showing men boarding the Chesapeake, images of Captain Halsey, one of "Midshipmen Halsey, LeBreton, Pickens & Rodgers June 6th," and many of the ship itself. The midshipman is William "Bull" Halsey. From his biography (Potter, E.B. 2003: 31): In the summer of 1903 Bill embarked on his third and last midshipman's cruise. As was customary at the time, the mids spent half their time on a windjammer, half on a steamship. The sailing ship this summer was the "Chesapeake," a steel square-rigger. Bill, by this time no mean sailor, had worked up to port captain of the maintop, the second most responsible job for a first classman and one that gave him particular satisfaction, because his father was acting captain of the ship. ...On graduation day Bill...went to say good-bye to the Academy's chief master-at-arms. "I wish you all the luck in the world, Mr. Halsey," said the older man, "but you'll never be as good a naval officer as your father." What a reputation to try to live up to! But live up to it he did, from his service in WWII as well as his outspoken nature, the biographies are written about him, not his father. Others in these photos are harder to identify. Colonel James Regan, Regiment Commander of the 9th Infantry, is almost identified. Born in 1844, Regan started his military career as a musician in 1858. In 1865, he became 2nd Lieut. 18th Infantry, and saw service during the Indian Wars (he actually began in the field against Indians in Kansas in 1861). He joined the 9th Infy. in 1871. He served in Cuba, the Philippines, China Relief Expedition, Tientsin. Wounded in the expedition to Luzon and Tientsin, he returned to the states to recover, being assigned command of the 9th at Madison Barracks in 1903. Regan died in Manila in 1906, it is thought as a result of those wounds. General Orders No. 8, announcing Regan's death was issued in Manila, PI on June 28 by Lt. Col. Robertson and Capt. E.V. Bookmiller (see Regan's page at arlingtoncemetery.net). The second album contains an image of Regan and Capt. Bookmiller, and another with a James Robertson pictured. These gentlemen served together for many years (James may be the Col.'s son? - he seems young). An interesting snapshot of life in the service. Most depict families and relaxation (one is a "skirts" baseball game, wi
