Early New Hampshire Painted Militia Haversack, and Matching Canteen,

ca 1790-1820. Orange-painted linen canvas haversack with hand-painted black lettering 3rd Com./20th Regi. Back side of haversack with owner's name written in black F. Nichols with small vestige of brown leather strap. 12" height x 13.5" length. White paper tape on inside flap with inked inscription F. Nichols of Westminster, NH. Revolutionary War. Together with a blue-painted wooden canteen, 7.5 x 2.25", nailed construction, manufactured of two pieces of wood with a single wooden band, with leather strapping, the center decorated with an orange 8-pointed star, with a scratch-incised "TN" and traces of an indistinguishable black-painted cipher; the verso with an inked paper label bearing the same information as the canteen. Rarely do packs and matching canteens appear on the market. For a similar example see To Arms Sotheby's 1/19/03 William Guthman collection, lot number 310. Provenance: Ex Wiilliam Guthman Americana, Ex John Armiger Collection Condition: Original paint ca 90%, lacking leather straps, VG.
