FLEMISH SCHOOL EARLY 16TH CENTURY, CIRCLE OF THE MASTER OF THE HOLY BLOOD, THE LAMENTATION, OIL ON PANEL, THREE-LOBED AT THE TOP
This painting can be linked to the central panel of the Lamentation triptych in the Chapel of St Sang in Bruges (M. J. Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Painting, IXb, New York-Washington, 1973, p. 118), whose author, the Master of the Holy Blood (active around 1500-1520), takes his name. Of the many known versions and variants, our Pietà is similar in size to the painting held in the Capilla Real in Granada, which dates from the first half of the sixteenth century and which, like our Lamentation, must have circulated on the Antwerp market around 1520.
We would like to thank Peter van den Brink for linking our painting with the Lamentation triptych of the Master of the Holy Blood on the basis of a visual examination of the work.Special notice
