FRENCH SCHOOL 19TH CENTURY, IN THE MANNER OF NICOLAS POUSSIN PENANCE; ORDINATION, OIL ON CANVAS, A PAIR, VARIOUS RESTORATIONS
The present works include two of the seven compositions from the second series of the Seven Sacraments painted by Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) between 1644 and 1648 for the collector Paul Fréart de Chantelou (1609-1694). This suite of seven paintings, in the National Gallery in Edinburgh (inv. nos. NGL 067.46A-NGL 067.46F), differs from the inventive freshness of the first series in its scholarly conception (J. Thuillier, Nicolas Poussin Paris, 1994, p. 258).Special notice
